In Fall 2019, the US Lacrosse Board of Directors approved equipment-related rule changes designed to enhance heart protection for athletes, specifically to reduce the risk of arare injury calledcommotio cordis.Starting now, January 2021, US Lacrosse boys’ and girls’ field lacrosse rules will require that all goalie chest protectors must meet theNOCSAE performance standard ND200in order to be deemed legal for play.Here is the exact line from the rulebook which will apply for both boys and girls.
IMPORTANT: BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2021, A GOALKEEPER CHEST PROTECTOR DESIGNED FOR LACROSSE THAT INCORPORATES THE NOCSAE ND200 WILL BE LEGAL FOR PLAY AND SHALL CONTAIN AN SEI CERTIFICATION MARK.
In addition, beginning in January 2022, all field players in boys lacrosse must wear protection for commotio cordis that also meets the same NOCSAE performance standard and contain an SEI certification mark. The following manufacturers, Maverik, STX & Warrior, have all rolled out versions of goalie chest protection that meet the new NOCSAE performance standard and all contain an SEI certification mark.

Maverik has rolled out their EKG protection series. This protective line includes both field players and goalie coverage. The Maverik Max EKG goalie chest pad is built for both men and women goalies and meets the new NOCSAE performance standard ND200. The progressive design of this padallows for maximized movement with minimum bunching. Maverik also created two forms of chest protection for malefield players, theMaveirk Max EKG shoulder pad and the Maverik Max EKG speed pad. Both meet the new NOCSAE performance standard ND200. For newer players and advanced youththe Maverik MX EKG shoulder pad is the right choice, with the proper protection to help them reach their highest potential. Many players are already using these pads and love the extra safety without sacrificing mobility and comfort.

STX has quickly upgraded their popular Shield Goalie line of chest protectors. This line is built for both men and women goalies and meets the new NOCSAE performance standard ND200. STX has 3 offerings for goalies. The STX Shield 600 chest protector is used by advanced high school and collegiate level players. It has a back strap fitting system that keeps the pad in place and in the right position. The STX Shield 400 is for youth and advancing players, and is very comfortable, and offers a strap system that allows for vertical adjustability for all sizes of players. The STX Shield 200 is for tenders just starting out in goal. To the naked eye, these pads look practically the same as their predecessor but contain the extra protection required with the new safety rule. We also hear they will be releasing their new line of field protection in early 2021 that will add another option for players. Also just released for field players is the new STX Cell V Line of protection which includes a speed pad and full shoulder pad that will include the upgraded protection required for the performance standard ND200. The STX Cell protective has always been a huge hit with all ages and abilities of lacrosse and the new version will not disappoint fans of the older pads.

Warrior Lacrosse improved on their goalie chest protector, the Nemesis Pro Chest Pad 19, which meets the new standard and is tested to reduce the likelihood of commotio cordis. The new product is an upgrade of Warrior‚Äôs traditional Nemesis protector and now includes a foam chest plate with inserts that provide enhanced impact absorption at both high and low speeds. The new Nemesis 19 has been certified by the independent Safety Equipment Institute (SEI). Warrior intends to have smaller sizes, suitable for younger players, certified soon. “In regards to product design, we wanted to keep it in the same family, ” said Rick Janisse, the product engineer at Warrior Sports. “The biggest change was to the sternum area and the pads. ”
